What is your favorite Silent Hill game and why?

I like every game in the series, but I'd have to say my favorite game in the series is Silent Hill 2. The storyline, characters, and symbolism are amazing. The story just sucked me in and didn't let go. That's what I liked most about it.

My second favorite game would be Silent Hill 3.

So, tell us, what's your favorite game in the series?

By far, my most favored game in the series is the original.  It's what started it all!  The overall atmosphere (which the graphics did help convey, despite most people ranting on how "horrible" they are) has a whole other feeling from any other game in the series.  Most of my fondest memories come from the original as well...especially when I obtained a rare demo of the game in a cardboard sleeve, and watched as my friends trembled in fear during the school part...even though they were playing in broad daylight.  Just to see that such an experience could be brought forth from a game, especially in those days, amazed me beyond belief.

Silent Hill 2 comes very close to being placed as number 1 with the original.  Though, as Valtiel said, I too am obsessed with all games in the series, so it's hard for me to put them in any sort of order.

Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 1
Silent Hill Origins
Silent Hill 4

The story of Silent Hill 2 was just great. One of the best game stories I've seen, but they made the big plot twist just a bit too obvious, as almost every freaking character says something that hints towards it. Overall though, very well done.
Great atmosphere, music, better gameplay, passable acting, good writing. It made me a very happy clam.

...Hoping Homecoming will be my new favorite.

Did anyone else get reminded of the original Silent Hill through elements of Silent Hill: Origins?

...or was it just me, heh

Origins gets slammed a lot, but all in all it was a decent game with good action and clever puzzles. It had some elements taken from the atmosphere of SH2 which is why I enjoyed it overall. The character development was awesome and the storytelling itself was top notch. Plus, it had the theater level - one of the best levels in the Silent Hill franchise.

Being able to use the mirrors to go back and forth to the Otherworld was really cool, and I like how it was implemented. Probably one of the coolest features of Origins.

But there were a few main problems with it.

Not enough ammo/resources. This is what bothered me the most. So many #$@#!(@ monsters and not enough ways to deal with them or heal yourself. They probably added this lack of resources for suspense/tension and to create a feeling of impending doom, but it felt forced and ended up more annoying than fun. No ammo? No fun. No health items? No fun, especially with all the...

Cheap shots. I especially hated entering a new room and getting attacked before the screen is even finished loading. Too many of those cheap shots plagued Origins to it's core and almost made me stop playing the game. The motel level was especially bad for these cheap attacks.

No difficulty settings. This was really a tragic flaw. The beauty of most of the Silent Hill games is being able to set the action and riddle level. This was completely lacking in Origins, so everyone got the same generic gaming experience with low replayability.

Still, I would encourage anyone who hasn't played it to pick it up. It's still a good game, even with these few flaws.

So glad to hear someone else enjoyed Origins also...I've mostly just seen rantings of mindless reasons to hate the game from all the other people who were asked about it.

My favorite was 4. I just liked the characters and the storyline. I also thought how the other ghosts, not the ones of the actual characters, have their own stories too, but it does suck that you dont find about them in 4.

Well, don't get me wrong in particular. I love every Silent Hill game, I just think some are better than others.
I certainly don't hate any of them.

No worries, as long as you have thought-out reasons as to your particular dislikes to the game, it's cool Tongue

I was just talking about all those ones I was hearing like "Doooh, it's not made by a Japanese team! It's deh sux!" (Which I've been hearing about Silent Hill: Homecoming too).  Those are what bother me.

SH2 and SH3. I never finished SH3 but it made an excellent impression right away. Duh, and the original, of course.

I have to agree with what a few others have said and that my favourite game is SH2, because the gameplay and the graphics and the overall feel, and not least of all Pyramid Head and the concept behind the whole thing.

However, Silent Hill 1 is very close to a tie, once again because it was the original.  Because the first time I played it, I was a terrified little 12 year old girl and I LOVED IT.  Because even when I was in my senior year of high school, five years later, that first game that started it all was still exciting.  It never "got old."  I never got sick of it.  It began and fuelled the addiction of a lifetime.  As a girl gamer, people expect me to be all into Pokemon and The Sims and godknows whatever else, but Silent Hill thrust me into the depths of awesomely eerie survival horror, and that was the end of it.

I have fonder memories of SH 1 as well; senior year of high school me and my best girlfriend spent an entire day at her house playing through the whole game, taking turns on controls and compiling a notebook of clues and maps and hints and the locations of save points and just everything.  I wish I still had that notebook.  That was one of the most notable days of my final year in Canada, I love it.  And Silent Hill 1 shall forever go down in my personal history!

SH 2 - perfect blend of action, puzzles, atmosphere, sounds/music, and WTFs - An all around great game, and definitely my favorite of all time! Cheesy

I would rank the series like this:

-Silent Hill 2
-Silent Hill Origins
-Silent Hill 3
-Silent Hill
-Silent Hill 4

I don't hate SH 4, the story was decent, and the overall SH experience was good.  I did not like the horrible 'First-person' view in the apartment, the hauntings in the apartment or the annoying and out-of-place ghosts (c'mon, this is Silent Hill, not Fatal Frame!).  Let us remember, though, that this was not originally a Silent Hill game.  It was designed to be a stand alone, but in mid-production, Konami decided to add it to the Silent Hill collection.

I really like them all but 2 and 4 stand top of the others. I'll never understand the hatred towards 4 it wasn't confusing at all. I even liked the different design choices (the first person view apartment.) Even the ghosts didn't bother me. This is Silent Hill we are talking about the most supernatural town gone awry in existence. I like how the effects of silent hill are branching off to other towns Shepherds Glen anyone. I'm not here to step on toes, but I will defend the games that get picked on.

The original is still one of the scariest to me, and gets points for holding so many memories, being the first in the series. I used to love Resident Evil, but I remember my step brother getting the Silent Hill demo, and I knew I had found something truly amazing.

However, I think Silent Hill 2 has the best story. The rest of the game was good too, but it's the story that really made it great for me.

I really liked Silent hill 3, but it was the least scary to me. I love that the story ties heavily into the first game though. Gameplay-wise, 3 is the most fun to actually play for me.

Silent Hill 4: The Room...This one is hard to explain. I think I would rank it 2nd in how much it scared me. The story was very interesting too, but not in the same way as number 2. The gameplay is just fine, I actually like the apartment-hub idea. There's just something about the game though that I really really like, and I can't put my finger on it. The atmosphere, the idea of being locked in the apartment, the people you meet and the ones that die.

I think I'd have to say that the overall presentation is what's great. The game presents itself well and seems very...together. I don't know how else to say it. For me, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4 excel over the others in the same areas, but in different ways, both of which work.

Overall, I'd have to say, in order of most like to least liked...(even though I love them all)

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams
Silent Hill 4: The Room
Silent Hill 1
Silent Hill 3

SH 2 and SH 4 are borderline tied for me, but SH2 just has a little deeper place in my heart to bump it up to first place.

SH1 is classic, but I don't want to sort these by which games make me the most nostalgic. It's tied with SH4 for me over which is scarier.

SH3's story was a great continuation from SH1, but other than that it just doesn't seem as great to me as the others. Things I did like---
-Some of the best extras of the series
-Female lead=cool, they should do it again sometime
-hardest puzzles of the series (on hard riddle difficulty) The Shakespeare puzzle had me thinking for a whole evening before I got it, I want more puzzles like that!

So there's my breakdown. I think for the ultimate Silent Hill game we need SH3's quality of puzzles and extras, SH2's storyline quality, SH1's scariness, and SH4's quality of new gameplay elements.

No worries, I loved 4 as well and it was my favorite because not only was it amazing but it was easily the most disturbing Silent Hill I ever played so far and I have played and beaten them all several times. I own them as well. It was truly haunting watching Cynthia die in your arms and that was just one of many things that just down right terrified me about Silent Hill 4. I was truly disturbed on a level I had not been from any other Silent Hill title even to today. That is saying something as all have been scary as hell thus far.

Silent Hill Homecoming could take the cake though...but it would take a ton to gain my favorite Silent Hill ever award as Silent Hill 4 really brought it for me and truly was disturbing all the way through.

Origins makes a close 2nd for it definetly was freaking creepy and it preyed on my fear of Hospitals and Asylums. Making you go through both of those right off one after another freaked me out and was completely evil but also the theater level was amazing! Best yet in the franchise.

Silent Hill 3 had the best character in the series so far.

That is my opinion!

Cheers! =)

1.) Silent Hill 2
1 and a half) Silent Hill 4
2.)Silent hill
3.)Silent hill: Homecoming
4.)Silent Hill: 0rigins
5.)Silent Hill 3

I'd just like to make it clear I think quite highly of the low-ranking ones, it's just I was trying hard not to have any ties, as you can see by the inclusion of (1 and a half).

I'd actually like to move Homecoming to last place. Just consider Silent Hill 0rigins to have Homecoming's place, and 3 to have 0rigins's place.

I would have to say Silent Hill 4: The Room. It was different. That's why. I love how they explained everything from The Order, and the Wish/Hope House. Yes, it did lack some sense of fear the others had...But by far, I love 4.
